Women's Soccer Enjoyed a Winning Weekend With Two Defeats
9/14/1998
The Pittsburgh Panther women's soccer team enjoyed a winning weekend and brought home their second Big East victory of the season.
A second half scoring spree gave Pittsburgh its second victory of the year when it defeated Wagner, 11-1, in a non-conference matchup on Sept. 11. Six different players scored 10 of 11 goals after halftime. Wagner's Kathy Zufall scored the first goal of the game at the 12:56 mark. Forward Cande Ruiz (Oxnard, Calif./Santa Clara) followed three minutes later with the tying goal and the rest of the game belonged to Pittsburgh. Ruiz led the scoring with a total of three goals, including a game-winning header at 48:25, and four assists. Midfielder Charity McClure (Ashville, N.C./Ashville) also had three goals and added two assists. Freshman forwards Anya Bohun-Chudyniv (Silver Spring, Md./John F. Kennedy) and Patricia Bradley (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy) scored the first goals of their collegiate careers, while junior midfielder Megan Beasley (Longmont, Colo./Longmont) tallied her first on the season.
The Panthers defeated St. John's, 4-3, in Big East play on Sept. 13. McClure once again led Pittsburgh with two goals and an assist, including both the tying and game-winning goals. The Panthers were down 2-1 at the half until Bradley tied the game at 2-2 (50:31) with the assist by McClure. Lisa Kaczmarski scored the go-ahead goal for the Red Storm, before McClure tied it up once again off a header at the 64:15 mark. Pittsburgh's game-winner came by McClure at 71:33 off a breakaway assist by Bradley. Sophomore goalkeeper Nicole Bashor (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) recorded 13 saves and her second Big East win for the Panthers.
Pittsburgh plays its first home games of the season when it hosts two Big East Conference rivals this week. The Villanova Wildcats come to Pitt Stadium on Friday, Sept. 18 (7:30 p.m.). The Panthers take on the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers on Sunday, Sept. 20 at Sewickley Academy (1 p.m.).
