10/7/1998
PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Panther women's soccer team defeated crosstown foe Duquesne tonight, 1-0, in non-conference action. It was Pittsburgh's second-straight victory.
Redshirt freshman Cande Ruiz (Oxnard, Calif./Santa Clara) scored the lone goal for the Panthers off a header on a corner kick brought in by forward Brigid Handforth (Downington, Pa./Bishop Shanahan). The goal came 67:24 into the match. It was the fourth game-winning goal for Ruiz this season, and her second in a row. She now moves into first place on the team with 21 points (eight goals, five assists).
Pittsburgh goalkeeper Nicole Bashor (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) recorded eight saves while facing 14 shots by the Dukes. Tonight's victory gives Bashor her seventh win and second shutout of the year.
Duquesne was lead by forward Sarah Nicholson, who had four shots on the night.
The Panthers return to Big East action on Sunday, Oct. 11, when they take on Syracuse at Sewickley's Nichols Field in their final home game of the season. Game time is 1 p.m.
