Women's Soccer Splits a Pair of Non-Conference Matches

The Pittsburgh women's soccer team split a pair of nonconference matches this week to move its record to 8-9 overall.
The Panthers took on crosstown opponent Robert Morris on Oct. 22 and won 6-3. Freshman forward Cande Ruiz (Oxnard, Calif./Santa Clara) led Pittsburgh with two goals, including the game-winner, and an assist.
The Panthers scored six unanswered goals before the Colonials got on the board. Charity Kriley (Boise, Idaho/Meridian), Brigid Handforth (Downington, Pa./Bishop Shanahan), Charity McClure (Asheville, N.C./Asheville) and Renee Spampinato (Rochester, N.Y./Irondequait) all netted goals for Pittsburgh.
The Panthers traveled to Old Dominion on Oct. 25 and were shut out, 3-0. Freshman Jen Henley led the way for the Lady Monarchs, scoring the first two goals and assisting on the third. Melanie McGovern scored the third goal for Old Dominion with just one second remaining in the game. Ruiz currently leads Pittsburgh in scoring with 26 points on 10 goals and six assists. She has also recorded five game-winning goals on the season.
The Panthers return to Big East action when they travel to West Virginia for their last regular season matchup of the year on Saturday, Oct. 31. Game time is 1 p.m. The playoffs begin on Tuesday and Wednesday, Nov. 3 and 4, with quarterfinals at campus sites.
