Pittsburgh Drops Tight Contest
10/2/1998
PITTSBURGH, Pa.--The Panthers took on Boston College on Oct. 2 at Pitt Stadium and lost a close game, 1-0.
Both teams were held scoreless by strong defenses for 89 minutes, until freshmen Meghan Moore scored the lone goal for the Eagles with just 23 seconds remaining in the game. Janice Collein was credited with the assist.
Midfielder Charity McClure (Ashville, N.C./Ashville) and forward Anya Bohun- Chudyniv (Silver Spring, Md./John F. Kennedy) led the Panthers with two shots apiece. Goalkeeper Nicole Bashor (Dayton, N.J./South Brunswick) was outstanding in goal with 10 saves on 14 shots by the Eagles.
Pittsburgh climbed out of its losing slump when the Panthers defeated Providence, 3-2, on Oct. 4 at Sewickley's Nichols Field. Freshman forward Cande Ruiz (Oxnard, Calif./Santa Clara) had a hand in every goal for Pittsburgh, including the game-winner. Ruiz fed a pass to forward Brigid Handforth (Downington, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) who placed it in the upper right corner of the goal for the first score of the game just 3:11 into the contest. Ruiz followed up with a goal of her own at the 21:45 mark. Providence's Patricia Moore brought the game to within one, before Ruiz responded with her second goal two minutes before the half. Midfielder Katrina Shibata (Lakewood, Calif./Mayfair) got the assist. Moore scored again for Providence 61:51 into the game, but the Panthers held out for the win. Bashor recorded nine saves on the day and her sixth win of the season.
Pittsburgh moves to 6-5 overall and 5-2 in the Big East. With eight teams moving on to postseason play, five conference wins give the Panthers playoff hopes.
Pittsburgh takes on crosstown rival Duquesne on Wednesday, Oct. 7 at 7:30 p.m. at Pitt Stadium. The Panthers then host Big East foe Syracuse at Nichols Field on Sunday, Oct. 11.
