Pittsburgh - The Pittsburgh Panther women's soccer team was defeated by Syracuse today, 4-1, in a Big East match-up at Sewickley's Nichols Field. It was only the third Big East loss for Pittsburgh this season.
The Orangewomen led 2-0 at halftime with first half goals by Molly Schmelzle 31:40) and Trisha Burch (34:50).
Sophomore midfielder Charity Kriley (Boise, Idaho/Meridian) scored the lone goal for the Panthers, and her first of the season, 47:10 into the match. Forwards Mia Mora (Chula Vista, Calif./Hilltop) and Brigid Handforth (Downington, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) were credited with the assists.
Syracuse secured its win with two goals in 49 seconds in the second half. Stacy Shanning scored at the 83:05 mark. Erin O'Grady clinched the win for the Orangewomen with a goal at 83:54. Jenna Szyluk assisted on both second-half goals for Syracuse.
Pittsburgh moves to 7-6 overall and 5-3 in the Big East. The Panthers return to Big East action on Friday, Oct. 16 when they travel to Seton Hall. Game time is 3 p.m.
