PITTSBURGH – Layne Van Buskirk of women’s volleyball and Nick Wolk of men’s cross country were named the Pitt Student-Athletes of the Week following impressive performances in their respective sports.
Van Buskirk, a senior, hit a team-best .600 over the weekend for No. 3 Pitt volleyball while leading the Panthers to back-to-back sweeps at Fitzgerald Field House. She paced Pitt with 2.67 kills and 1.33 blocks per frame. The Windsor, Ontario, native reached a milestone against North Carolina (Oct. 18), recording the 1,000th kill of her career. She had nine kills for the match on .533 hitting, and followed that performance with a .700 outing against NC State (Oct. 20) with seven kills and zero errors on 10 attempts. Her performances helped the Panthers win their school-record 29th and 30th consecutive matches when playing at the Field House.
Wolk continued to impress for the Panthers this weekend at the Arturo Barrios Invitational hosted by Texas A&M. In a strong field that featured multiple ranked programs, the senior captain earned a ninth-place finish in the 8K race (23:55.6). Wolk has posted the highest team finish in each meet he has taken part in this season for Pitt.
Up next, a big road trip awaits No. 3 Pitt volleyball (19-1, 8-0), as the Panthers will visit (RV) Notre Dame Friday and (RV) Louisville Sunday.
Pitt cross country will compete next at the ACC Championships Friday, Nov. 1, in Blacksburg, Va.
