PITTSBURGH – Amanda West of women’s soccer and Jaylen Twyman of football were named the University of Pittsburgh Student-Athletes of the Week following impressive performances in their respective sports.
West, a freshman, continued her strong start to her Pitt women’s soccer career this past weekend as she helped the Panthers go 1-0-1 and improve to 3-2-1 overall on the season. The Ontario native finished off her weekend with a goal, two assists and nine shots for the Panthers. On Friday night against Rhode Island, West notched an assist on Sydney Marasco's game-tying goal in the 85th minute while she also posted a team-high four shots in the 1-1 draw. West was all over the pitch on Sunday as she netted her third game-winning goal of the season in the 73rd minute as she finished off the penalty kick. She later added an assist on Margret Arnadottir's first career goal.
West has now posted at least one point in all six matches for the Panthers as she has netted seven goals, three assists, 17 points and a team-high 29 shots on the season. Her 17 points are the most in a season by a Pitt player since 2014 and she is the first Panther in program history to record at least one point in six straight matches to begin a career.
Twyman, a sophomore, was dominant in Pitt football’s win over Ohio, collecting three sacks for losses totaling 22 yards. He had four total tackles on the day and was a huge reason the Panthers limited Ohio to 212 total yards and only 35 on the ground. Twyman's sack total was the highest by a Pitt player since defensive end Ejuan Price had five vs. Louisville on Nov. 21, 2015. It marked the most sacks by a Pitt defensive tackle since Aaron Donald also had three vs. Utah on Oct. 15, 2011.
Up next, Pitt women’s soccer (3-2-1) will look to stay unbeaten at home when it hosts VCU Thursday at 7 p.m. ET at Ambrose Urbanic Field.
Pitt football will visit 13th-ranked Penn State Saturday in the final contest of a four-game renewal of the in-state rivalry. Kickoff is set for noon ET on ABC.
