PITTSBURGH – Volleyball’s Kayla Lund and men’s soccer’s Edward Kizza were named the University of Pittsburgh Student-Athletes of the Week, announced Tuesday.
Following a career weekend, Lund was named ACC Volleyball Player of the Week as well as MVP of the Panther Challenge. The sophomore led the Panthers to an undefeated opening weekend, including wins over Butler, No. 24 Cal Poly and Pepperdine. Over the three matches, she contributed 42 kills with 4.2 kills per set on a .468 percentage. She also produced 32 digs and three service aces. Lund set a career high in kills against No. 24 Cal Poly, registering 20. The Pasadena, Calif., native finished the weekend with two double-doubles and three double-figure kill matches, while hitting .350 or higher in all three contests. After the dominant weekend, the Panthers earned their highest national ranking in program history, coming in a No. 14 in the AVCA Coaches Poll.
Kizza added his name to the Pitt men’s soccer record book in multiple ways Monday night as the Panthers dominated Delaware, 6-1. The sophomore became the 20th Panther in program history to record a hat trick, and his goal in the opening minutes of the match was the quickest goal scored in school history, coming just 1:40 into the contest and besting the previous record of 1:58 set in 2006. Seniors Robby Dambrot and Javi Perez and redshirt freshman Fiorre Mane each added one goal apiece, while sophomores Alexander Dexter and Jose Luis Sena Arbona and freshmen Nyk Sessock and Chandler Vaughn each contributed an assist.
Up next, the 14th-ranked Pitt volleyball team will travel to South Orange, N.J., for a trio of matches at the Seton Hall Classic. The Panthers will face Oklahoma Friday, Aug. 31, at 4:30 p.m., followed by a doubleheader Saturday, Sept. 1, against the host Pirates (10 a.m.) and VCU (4 p.m.).
Pitt men’s soccer (1-1-0) will travel to Akron, Ohio, to face the fourth-ranked Zips Saturday, Sept. 1, at 7 p.m.
