PITTSBURGH – University of Pittsburgh student-athletes Kalista Walters and Shamiel Stevenson were named First National Bank Student-Athletes of the Week, announced Tuesday.
Walters, a junior center, hit a school-record 12-of-12 from the field in an 87-49 win for Pitt women's basketball (8-6, 0-1 ACC) over Chicago State Sunday at Petersen Events Center. The Fleetwood, Pa., native's performance marked a single-game school record for field goal percentage with a minimum of 10 attempts. The previous record of 14-of-16 (.875) was set by Lorri Johnson against Cleveland State Dec. 19, 1988. Walters ended Sunday’s contest with a game-high 24 points and to go along with four rebounds and two blocks. She leads the ACC and is third in the nation in field goal percentage (.679, 76-of-112).
Stevenson, a freshman, came off the bench to score a game-high 16 points to go along with four rebounds for Pitt men’s basketball (8-6, 0-1 ACC) against No. 15 Miami (Fla.) Saturday at Petersen Events Center. He went 6-of-9 from the field and 3-of-4 from the foul line in the contest. The Toronto, Ontario, native has scored in double figures seven times and is ninth among ACC freshmen in scoring at 10.4 points per game. He is second on the team in rebounding (5.3 rpg), while shooting 51.5 percent (50-of-97) from the field.
Pitt women’s basketball will host Wake Forest for its first ACC home game of the season Thursday at 7 p.m. at Petersen Events Center. Tickets are available online at PittsburghPanthers.com or by calling 1-800-643-PITT (7488).
Pitt men’s basketball travels to Kentucky to face Louisville Tuesday at KFC Yum! Center. The game will be broadcast on ESPNU and is scheduled to tipoff at 9 p.m. ET.
