PITTSBURGH – Kayla Lund of volleyball and Demetrius Thomas of wrestling were named the Office Depot Student-Athletes of the Week following impressive performances in their respective sports.
Lund, a junior, led the ACC Champion No. 2 Pitt volleyball team with 4.57 kills per set as the Panthers took down Florida State and NC State over the weekend. Against the Seminoles, she produced her team-best seventh double-double with 14 kills and 16 digs (Nov. 22). Next, she led Pitt with 18 kills in the Panthers’ road finale at NC State (Nov. 24). The Pasadena, Calif., native downed a team-high three service aces over the two matches while averaging 2.86 digs and 0.43 assists per frame. Her contributions helped Pitt improve to 17-0 in the ACC with just one match remaining in the regular season.
Thomas, a senior, came up clutch for Pitt wrestling as he lifted the team to victory Sunday afternoon. The heavyweight needed to win by at least a decision to tie the dual, 18-18, as the Panthers won the dual based on the third criteria, total match points: 39-34. Thomas, who ranks No. 9 at heavyweight, upset No. 6 Jordan Wood. The win was Pitt’s first over Lehigh since 2013.
No. 2 Pitt volleyball (28-1, 17-0) will go for an undefeated ACC schedule when the host Louisville (19-8, 12-5) to close the regular season Wednesday at 6 p.m. ET at Petersen Events Center on ACC Network.
Pitt wrestling (2-1) will head to Morgantown, W.Va., for the Backyard Brawl at West Virginia Thursday, Dec. 5, at 7 p.m. ET.
