PITTSBURGH – Sabrina Starks of women’s volleyball and Patrick Jones II of football were named the University of Pittsburgh Student-Athletes of the Week following impressive performances in their respective sports.
Starks, a sophomore middle blocker, helped guide the No. 3 Pitt volleyball team to road wins at Miami (Oct. 4, 3-0) and No. 23 Florida State (Oct. 6, 3-1) over the weekend. The Springfield, Neb., native hit a team-best .455 for the week with 12 kills. In addition to her offensive accuracy, she provided stout defense with a team-best 1.14 blocks per frame. Her performances helped Pitt reach a 4-0 start to ACC play for the fourth consecutive season, winning 12 of the first 13 sets of league competition. Pitt's 3-1 win over No. 23 Florida State was its fourth against a ranked opponent this year, marking the most in a single season in school history.
Facing a Duke team that had surrendered just one sack in its first four games, Jones II got double that in one evening. The defensive end sacked Blue Devils quarterback Quentin Harris twice, forcing critical fumbles that Pitt recovered each time. His first sack jarred the ball loose at the Duke 7 and Pitt cashed in two plays later with a touchdown for a 26-3 lead. His final sack iced the game. With Pitt protecting a three-point lead and under 30 seconds to go, Jones stripped Harris again and Pitt recovered to seal the result. In total, Jones compiled six tackles, two sacks (18 yards in losses), two forced fumbles and an additional hurry.
Up next, No. 3 Pitt volleyball (15-1, 4-0 ACC) will stay on the road to face Syracuse (Oct. 11) and Boston College (Oct. 13).
Pitt football (4-2, 1-1 ACC) will be back in action Saturday, Oct. 18, at Syracuse for a 7 p.m. ET kickoff on ESPN.
