PITTSBURGH – Kamalani Akeo of volleyball and Micky Phillippi of wrestling were named the University of Pittsburgh Student-Athletes of the Week, announced Tuesday.
Akeo, a senior setter for the ACC Champion Pitt volleyball team (30-2, 17-1 ACC), had an outstanding weekend for the Panthers as they hosted the NCAA Tournament First and Second Rounds at Petersen Events Center (Nov. 30, Dec. 1). Playing in what would be her final matches as a Panther, Akeo secured sole possession of third place in the Pitt record book with 3,956 career assists. She posted 20 in Pitt’s First Round sweep of Iona (Nov. 30), and added 28 against Michigan in the Panthers’ Second Round loss (Dec. 1). Akeo had a team-high three service aces over the two matches and averaged 1.62 digs per set.
Phillippi, a redshirt freshman, had a stellar weekend at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invite, earning a runner-up finish at 133 pounds. Phillippi entered the weekend seeded sixth and ranked 13th at his weight class by InterMat. Following his performance, he’s now jumped up to No. 6 in the nation at 133 pounds and was named ACC Co-Wrestler of the Week.
Phillippi finished 4-1 on the weekend with two wins coming against returning All-Americans. He topped No. 7 Ethan Lizak of Minnesota in the quarterfinals in a 4-0 decision and followed that by knocking off fifth-ranked Luke Pletcher of Ohio State in the semifinals, 3-1. The redshirt freshman faced the No. 1 seed and third-ranked Nick Suriano of Rutgers, but fell in an 11-3 major decision.
Phillippi is now 6-1 on the year with four wins over ranked opponents. The Panthers finished seventh (77.0) out of 43 teams in Las Vegas, for their best finish at the tournament since 2008 when they finished fourth (85.0).
Up next, Pitt wrestling will host regional rival West Virginia Saturday, Dec. 15, at 7 p.m. at Fitzgerald Field House.
