Brian Regan returned to the role of Director of Basketball Operations prior to the 2018-19 season after spending two years at Pitt as the Director of Event Management and Camps and Clinics. He is in his 19th season as a member of the basketball staff and his 21st year with the athletic department.
Regan’s various responsibilities include managing the day-to-day operations of the program, including logistics of team practices, meals and meetings. He assists the coaching staff with scheduling and is heavily involved in developing the team’s itinerary for all road games. Regan also runs the program’s summer camps and has direct oversight of the Pitt student-manager team.
Regan has coordinated Pitt’s foreign tours to Italy (2019) and Barcelona (2023) for 60-person travel parties. The Panthers visited Rome, Florence, Bologna and Venice and won all three games during the trip in 2019. The 2023 trip included a stop in the Canary Islands, where twins Guillermo and Jorge Diaz Graham are from.
Under Regan’s leadership from 2016-18, the athletic department developed a camp manual for its year-round youth camps owned and operated by the team coaches. He was also the event manager for swimming and diving, softball, wrestling and women’s tennis. Regan directed
facility projects in the Petersen Events Center, where he developed and implemented a design plan for the men’s and women’s basketball hallway project.
Regan returned to the University of Pittsburgh in August of 2007 to join Jamie Dixon’s staff as the Video Coordinator. A year later, he was promoted to Director of Men’s Basketball Operations, a position that he held until being promoted to Assistant Athletic Director of Men’s Basketball Operations in 2013. During that span, the Panthers had one of their most successful runs with a 223-93 record and nine postseason appearances, including two No. 1 seeds in the NCAA Tournament (2009 and 2011). Pitt made an Elite Eight appearance in 2009 and also captured the 2008 Big East Tournament title, the 2011 Big East Regular Season title and the 2012 CBI Tournament Championship. In his first stint at Pitt, Regan served as head coach Paul Evans’ graduate assistant from 1988-1990 when the Panthers appeared in the 1989 NCAA Tournament.
Regan’s previous work with the men’s basketball program internally included reporting directly to the Athletic Director for all matters relating to the men’s basketball program. This included the two million dollar basketball suite renovations for both the men’s and women’s basketball
teams. He assisted with the national recruiting effort, planning of player development, practice planning and game scouting preparation. He was the supervisor of the program’s student managers, graduate assistants and student workers. He also researched and implemented the basketball programs video editing systems.
Externally, Regan organized Pitt’s foreign tours to both Ireland (2010) and the Bahamas (2014) as well as the 2015 Armed Forces Classic game against Gonzaga in Okinawa, Japan. He was the liaison for NBA teams, the player summer league and directed the highly successful summer basketball camps.
Prior to his return to the University of Pittsburgh, Regan spent five seasons as an assistant coach at Colgate University in Hamilton, N.Y. During that time, he directed the national recruiting effort and served as the program’s academic coordinator. Working primarily with the post players, Regan coached three all-conference performers.
Prior to Colgate, Regan served as the associate head coach and assistant to the Athletic Director at Assumption College for three seasons. In 2002, the Greyhounds won the NE10 regular-season title and went to the Sweet Sixteen, finishing the season 24-6.
Regan went to Assumption after serving as the assistant basketball coach at several Pittsburgh colleges including Slippery Rock (1994-99), LaRoche College (1993-94), and Robert Morris (1990-93). In 1992, Robert Morris captured the Northeast Conference regular season and conference tournament titles to advance to the NCAA Tournament.
A 1988 graduate of St. Vincent College in Latrobe, Pa., with a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications, Regan served as a student assistant to head coach Bernie Matthews. During his college years, Regan started and developed his own basketball camps at Pittsburgh area high schools.
Regan resides in Pittsburgh with his wife, Catherine, and their two children, Sophia and Brendan.
