Regy Thorpe joined the Pitt lacrosse program June 30, 2020 as an assistant coach.

Thorpe spent the last year as the New York Riptide head coach and general manager in the National Lacrosse League. Prior to that, Thorpe spent 10 seasons as the associate head coach of his alma mater Syracuse with the women’s lacrosse team. His success and experiences will be a major asset in building Pitt’s inaugural team.

In addition to his extensive coaching path, Thorpe also enjoyed a successful playing career. He got his start at Herkimer County Community College where he was a JUCO Defensive Player of the Year and All-American in 1991. He then finished his collegiate career at Syracuse where helped the Orange to a runner-up finish in 1992 and NCAA title in 1993. Thorpe also garnered All-America honors while at Syracuse. He was a member of the U.S. National Indoor Lacrosse Team, and played professionally for the Rochester Rattlers (2001-2006) and Rochester Knighthawks. The Rattlers reached the Major League Lacrosse Final Four in 2001, 2004 and 2005, while the Knighthawks (1995-2010) made 13 consecutive playoff appearances and were crowned World Champions in 1997 and 2007.

While with the Orange, Thorpe coached and mentored 21 IWLCA All-Americans, six IWLCA Players of the Year and six Tewaaraton Trophy Finalists. He saw Syracuse make 10 NCAA Tournament appearances, including six Final Fours and two championship finals.

During his time with Syracuse and the Riptide, Thorpe served as the head coach of the U.S. Lacrosse Indoor Box Lacrosse World Team. He also serves as the Chief Lacrosse Officer for 3DLacrosse. Thorpe spent a year as the head coach of the Long Island Sound of the United Women’s Lacrosse League and led them to an undefeated season and championship in 2017.

Thorpe is an inductee of numerous Hall of Fames including: Jordan Elbridge Hall of Fame, U.S. Lacrosse Rochester Chapter Hall of Fame, NJCAA Lacrosse Hall of Fame, and Rochester Knighthawks National Lacrosse League Hall of Fame.
