PITTSBURGH – The Pitt Panthers (22-9) won their midweek matchup with Youngstown State (5-26), 12-2, in just seven innings on Wednesday evening.
LHP Antonio Doganiero had arguably the best start of his career this evening. The sophomore did not allow a single run over his six innings while striking out seven. His seven strikeouts tied a career high that he set in last week's win over Mercyhurst.
Doganiero, now 5-1 on the season, leads the team in wins. He has allowed just one run while striking out 18 in his last three starts.
Caden Dulin (2-4, 2 R) hit a grand slam and drove in five runs in the win. He has now recorded a hit in each of the last 11 games. Trey Fenderson logged another multi-hit, multi-RBI, game going 2-3 with three RBI. Kai Wagner slugged his fifth home run of the season. Joey Baran went 1-2 with two runs scored, a RBI and a walk. He's reached base safely in each of the last 15 games. Carter Dierdorf worked two more walks on Wednesday. His 28 free passes this season rank second on the team.
The Panthers ended the top of the first inning with a perfectly executed relay to throw out a runner at the plate. Centerfielder Derrick Tarpley hit his cutoff man Trey Fenderson who then fired a strike to Sebastian Pisacreta at home who tagged out the runner for the third out of the inning.
Kai Wagner led off the Panthers' second inning with a solo shot to right center. Six more runs would come home following the leadoff homer as Pitt plated seven runs in the bottom of the second.
After a single from Trey Fenderson and a walk from Carter Dierdorf, Joey Baran would drive in Fenderson from third on an infield single. In the next at-bat, Derrick Tarpley Jr. drove in Dierdorf on RBI groundout to second to make it a three-run ballgame.
Nessler added a run on an RBI single to right and would score on Caden Dulin's RBI double down the right field line. Trey Fenderson got his second hit of the inning on a two-run single to left to extend Pitt's lead to seven after two.
Pitt's outfield threw another base runner out on the base paths in the top of the fourth inning. Leftfielder AJ Nessler cut down a YSU hitter at second who was trying to stretch a single into a double. The Panthers led 7-0 through the first four innings.
Antonio Doganiero continued to deal on the mound, holding the Penguins scoreless through six innings. He tied a career high in strikeouts, matching last Wednesday's total of seven.
The Panthers added five runs in the bottom of the sixth to extend their lead to twelve. Three walks to lead off the inning loaded the bases for Caden Dulin or launched a grand slam over the leftfield wall. Lorenzo Carrier hit a ground-rule double and moved up to third on Kai Wagner's ground out to second. Trey Fenderson would drive in Carrier on a sacrifice fly to give the Panthers a 12-0 lead.
The Penguins began the bottom of the seventh inning with a two-run home run, but Freddy Beruvides Jr. struck out the next three batters to give Pitt a 12-2 win on Wednesday.
Pitt hosts Cal in conference clash this weekend at Charles L. Cost Field. Game one is slated for 6 PM on Friday night.
