Panthers Win Overtime Battle at Louisville, 15-14

LOUISVILLE, KY – Pitt women's lacrosse rallied from a three-goal third quarter deficit to defeat Louisville 15-14 in overtime Saturday at UofL Lacrosse Stadium. Kaitlyn Giandonato scored the game-winner to secure their first conference road victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Panthers opened the scoring and jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first quarter behind goals from Paige Telatovich, Giandonato, Gigi Leonzi, and Emily Clemens. Louisville answered with three of their own in the final minutes of the frame to bring the score to 4-3.
The second quarter was a back-and-forth affair as Louisville tied it at four before Julia Bruno, Giandonato, and Maureen McNierney pushed Pitt back ahead 8-5. The Cardinals rallied again, pulling even at eight on a pair of man-up free position goals in the final three minutes of the half.
Louisville took control early in the third, scoring three consecutive goals to go ahead 11-8 but three-straight goals from the Panthers evened the game once again. McNierney knotted it at 11 before Louisville scored to go back up 12-11. Telatovich then struck twice late in the period, including the go-ahead goal with 26 seconds left, to give Pitt a 13-12 lead heading to the final 10 minutes.
The Cardinals tied the game at 14 with five minutes remaining in regulation, setting up the overtime period. Pitt controlled the opening draw, and Giandonato finished the game off with the sudden victory goal in extra time to secure the win.
GAME NOTES
- Giandonato finished with three goals and two assists for five points and scored the overtime winner for her 42nd goal of the season.
- Clemens recorded a hat trick with three goals and an assist.
- McNierney scored twice, including the goal that tied the game in the third quarter.
- Telatovich netted three goals, including back-to-back tallies in the final minute of the third quarter to give Pitt the late lead.
- Pitt won the draw battle 18-13.
- McGonagle recorded five caused turnovers.
- Cain made six saves in goal.
- Pitt's fourth ACC win is the most in a single season in program history.
