STANFORD, CA – The Pitt Panthers (14-4, 2-1 ACC) ended the weekend with two-straight wins over Stanford (7-12, 1-5 ACC) to clinch their first ACC series of the season.
Despite falling in the series opener, the Panthers roared back with two road wins to take the series. It's the first time that Pitt has won their first ACC series of the year since 2021.
Eddie Smink earned his first win of the season, throwing 5.1 stellar innings in relief for the Panthers. Smink surrendered just five hits and did not allow a single walk in his outing. When Pitt needed a steady presence on the mound, Smink delivered and kept the Cardinal bats at bay for the remainder of the afternoon. The Panthers rode him from the bottom of the fourth inning until the final out in the ninth.
Lorenzo Carrier reached in all six of his plate appearances on Sunday, going 4-4 with three runs scored, two walks, a double and an RBI. He is now hitting .516 and slugging 1.145 with 32 hits, 28 runs and 43 RBI this season.
Caden Dulin logged his first three-hit game of the season in the win, going 3-5 with two runs scored. Third baseman Kai Wagner knocked in runs on each of his hits as he had a season-high three RBI. AJ Nessler continues to get on base with another multiple-hit game this season. Nessler scored and drove in a run in his 11th multi-hit game of the year.
Kai Wagner got the scoring started on Sunday with a two-run double in the top of the first inning. Caden Dulin lined a one-out single to left and moved up to third on a Lorenzo Carrier double in the following at-bat. With two runners in scoring position, Wagner roped a double into the right center gap to give the Panthers a two-run lead in the first. Pitt scored first in all three games this weekend.
While Stanford tied the game up on a two-run home run in the bottom half of the inning, the Panthers responded with a four-run top of the second.
In his first at-bat since his go-ahead home run in Saturday's game two, Carter Dierdorf led off the second inning with a single to left. After Julian Irizarry reached on an error in the following at-bat, both he and Dierdorf moved up 90 feet on a balk. AJ Nessler would then drive in Dierdorf from third on an RBI groundout to put the Panthers back in front. Pitt took advantage of another Stanford balk as Irizarry trotted home on the second balk of the inning by the Cardinal pitcher. Kai Wagner drove in his third run of the game on a single to right center and Trey Fenderson lined an RBI double off the third base bag to extend the Panther lead to four.
Stanford plated two more on another two-run home run in the bottom of the second inning and the Panthers led 6-4 through two.
Pitt extended their lead to four with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning. Carter Dierdorf drove in Sebastian Pisacreta on a single to center after Pisacreta led off the inning with the first triple of his career. With runners on first and second, Lorenzo Carrier drove in Pitt's eighth run of the day on an RBI single to right. They led 8-4 after five innings.
The Panthers and Cardinal exchanged runs in the sixth and seventh innings as Pitt's four-run lead stayed put through seven innings.
Lorenzo Carrier got the Panther offense going in top of the seventh with his fourth hit of the game. Two walks in the following at-bats loaded the bases with two outs. Carrier dashed home on a wild pitch to extend Pitt's lead back to four.
The Panthers added insurance in the top of the ninth inning, extending their lead to five. Sebastian Pisacreta singled to left center with two outs and would score two at-bats later on a wild pitch to plate Pitt's 10th and final run of the day.
Eddie Smink finished off the Cardinal with a 1-2-3 ninth inning to complete his stellar outing and clinch Pitt's first ACC series of the season.
The Panthers return home this Wednesday, March 18 against Youngstown State at Charles L. Cost Field.
