Pitt Bounces Back, Tops American by Dozen

PITTSBURGH – No. 23 Pitt women's lacrosse snapped a three-game losing streak Wednesday, defeating American University 17-5 at Highmark Stadium to improve to 4-4 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
American scored first just under three minutes into the contest, but Pitt responded quickly. Julia Bruno tied the game moments later, and Avery Moon converted a free position to put the Panthers in front 2-1. The Eagles answered to knot it at two before Paige Telatovich restored the Pitt lead at 3-2 to close the first quarter.
Moon opened the second with another free position goal to make it 4-2. American pulled back within one before the Panthers went on a four-goal run, capped by a Moon tally with two seconds left in the half. Pitt took an 8-4 lead into the break.
Pitt erupted in the third, outscoring American 7-0 to put the game away, with Gigi Leonzi, Anna Capobres, Emily Clemens and Kaitlyn Giandonato all finding the net as the Panthers pushed the lead to 15-4. Telatovich added the final goal of the quarter with 1:19 remaining before Pitt scored twice more in the fourth to close out the 17-5 victory.
GAME NOTES
- Moon finished with a career-high five goals and an assist for six points, tying her career high.
- Capobres scored the first two goals of her collegiate career, both on free position conversions.
- Leonzi recorded a career-high four assists to go with two goals for six points, matching the career single-game high for a Pitt player.
- Giandonato added three goals and an assist for four points on the day.
- Aidan Carr dominated the draw circle with 18 draw controls, with Pitt winning 21 of 24 on the day.
- Moon's five goals gave her 17 on the season, extending her consecutive games with a goal streak to four and her consecutive games with a point streak to 24.
- Molly Cain made seven saves before Shaye Gluckman closed out the fourth quarter in net.
- Pitt went 5-for-6 on free position opportunities.
