CLEMSON, S.C. – Despite a pair of goals from graduate midfielder Arnau Vilamitjana and freshman midfielder Grayson Carter, the No. 10-ranked Pitt men's soccer team fell to No. 3 Clemson, 3-2, Friday evening at Historic Riggs Field in Clemson, S.C.
The Panthers got off to an early 1-0 lead in the sixth minute as junior midfielder Santiago Ferreira sent a corner kick into the box, which Vilamitjana headed home for his third goal of the season.
Minutes later, a Tiger forward was taken down in the box – resulting in a penalty kick that was saved by junior keeper Jack Moxom.
Undaunted, Clemson (3-0-1, 1-0-0 ACC) tacked on a pair of late first half goals from reigning ACC Freshman of the Year Ransford Gyan and took a 2-1 lead into the halftime break.
The Panthers settled in to open the second period, controlling possession and limiting the Tigers' attack.
In the 63rd minute, sophomore forward Lasse Dahl played a ball to Carter – who maneuvered through several defenders before firing a strike towards the left post to even the ledger (2-2). Of note, the goal came on Carter's first career shot.
The Panthers remained on the attack, pressuring Clemson's back line over the ensuing 15 minutes of action. However, the Tigers struck again in the 81st minute as Gyan played a through ball to Nathan Richmond – who slotted home the game winner.
Prior to Friday's result, Pitt was 61-3-3 when scoring first over the past six seasons.
