Pitt Falls to North Carolina in First ACC Contest of the Season

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Pitt fell to North Carolina, 3-1, in the first ACC contest of the season. The Panthers fell to 10-11 overall with the loss Friday evening.
Both teams threatened to score in the opening inning. Ahmari Braden recorded her first of two hits, a single, in the top of the first. She stole her team-leading tenth stolen base of the season but was left stranded. In the bottom half of the inning, the Tar Heels loaded the bases after two singles and a hit by pitch, however Kyra Pittman forced a groundout to escape the jam.
North Carolina broke through in the bottom of the third, scoring three runs on three hits and an error to break the tie.
The Panthers had a chance to get on the board in the top of the fourth inning as Braden hit a leadoff double to right field for her second hit of the evening, but to no avail.
In the sixth inning, senior Kylie Griggs drew a walk and advanced to second on a fielder's choice. Graduate student Kaitlyn Brannstrom then singled to right, bringing Griggs home for the Panthers' lone run.
Entering the game, the North Carolina offense averaged over eight runs per game. Pitt was able to limit their bats to just three. Kyra Pittman (5-6) threw six innings in the loss, giving up seven hits and two earned runs with two strikeouts.

The Panthers return for the second game of the three-game series tomorrow at 2 p.m.
