
Pitt Falls to Utah Tech, LMU at Louisville Slugger Invitational

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Pitt softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader during the Louisville Slugger Invitational, Saturday night at the LBSU Softball Complex. The Panthers dropped to Utah Tech, 5-2, on a late offensive effort from the Trailblazers and fell to LMU, 7-2.
Pitt 2, Utah Tech 5
The Trailblazers broke the scoreless tie in the top of the second inning after drawing a walk and scoring a run off a Pitt throwing error. The Panthers were held to two hits through the first three innings before Kaitlyn Brannstrom hit a leadoff single up the middle and Ana Hernandez hit another single up the middle to even the score at 1-1 after four innings.
Kyra Pittman entered the circle in the top of the fourth inning and retired the first three batters faced on seven pitches. Pittman allowed just one hit over her first nine batters faced.
Pitt and Utah Tech were tied 1-1 heading into the final inning of play. The Mavericks led off the top of the inning with a solo home run to take the lead. Utah Tech added three more runs in the inning with a single and taking advantage of two more Pitt fielding errors to make the score 5-1.
Shelby Frazier hit a leadoff single in the bottom of the seventh inning and later scored off an Ahmari Braden single down the right field line to make the final score 5-2.
Frazier (3-for-3) and Braden (3-for-4) combined for six of the Panthers' eight hits.
Pitt 3, LMU 7
Pitt and LMU each scored a run in the first inning before Lions took the lead after scoring two more runs in the second inning for a 3-1 advantage. Tieley Vaughn hit a double to lead off the top of the third inning and scored off a single up the middle from Kylie Griggs to make it a one-run game, 3-2.
Mikayla Jankovic entered the circle with two outs in the bottom of the third inning and retired her first four batters faced to end the inning. The Lions hit three singles in the bottom of the fifth to load the bases. The Panthers had another pitching change, entering Kyra Pittman into the circle with one out. Kealani Caster followed by hitting a grand slam to improve the Lions lead to 7-2.
Vaughn got her second hit of the night with a single to right field and scored off an Ahmari Braden triple to center field to make the final score 7-3. Braden finished 2-for-4 for her second consecutive multi-hit effort.
Lindsay O'Dell earned the win for the Lions and Gwen Sparks (3-3) was saddled with the loss.

Pitt wraps up the weekend with a single game against Long Beach State on Sunday, March 2 (ESPN+ - 7:30 p.m. ET).
