PITTSBURGH – Jenna Hendrickson recorded her tenth career game of three or more goals, but it was not enough as Pitt Lacrosse dropped a back and forth battle to Arizona State 14-11 at Highmark Stadium.
Wednesday's game proved to be close throughout and that started early with Arizona State working to a 3-2 lead after the first quarter. Jenna Hendrickson scored her third of the season and Talia Zuco scored her second which temporarily gave Pitt the lead, before the Sun Devils put their third in with 3:50 left on the clock.
In the second period, the teams were even with each putting three in the net. Hendrickson got number two after Zuco fired an eight meter shot off the post, when Hendrickson then quickly scooped the rebound and slung the shot into the goal. Emily Coughlin followed up from a tough angle on the right side of the net that beat the goalie and Avery Moon cut around the crease to score her second of the year, before ASU netted two to close the half and take the 6-5 lead into the locker room.
The Panthers began to take a grip on the game by leading the draw control battle in the third quarter (and second half), which helped lead to a five to four advantage in goals as well. It was all repeat scorers for the Panthers in the third, with Naylor scoring two, plus Zuco, Hendrickson and Coughlin scoring one a piece. Hendrickson's goal was once again off a quick rebound scoop to beat the Sun Devil keeper.
With the teams tied at 10 entering the final frame of play, Arizona State struck first and then scored two more in a row to grab hold of momentum and ultimately, the win. Moon was able to score the only tally for the home team in the fourth, which was not for a lack of opportunities. The Sun Devils scored a final goal with under two minutes to play to secure the 14-11 win in their second game of a season-opening road trip.
Pitt ended up recording a higher number of shots, ground balls and draw controls than Arizona State, but it wasn't enough to result in a victory. Senior Jill Fenech picked up three draw controls, which helped her surpass the 200 mark for her career. Abby Thorne and Natalie Voorhees each caused three turnovers, matching their career highs.
The Panthers will look to bounce back next week, when they host Penn State at Highmark Stadium on Tuesday, February 18. First draw is set for 4 PM and admission is free for all fans.
