Evans Claims 157 Title at Midlands Championships

EVANSTON, Ill. – Dylan Evans claimed the 157-pound title as Pitt finished second overall in the team standings at the 2025 Ken Kraft Midlands Championships Tuesday at Ryan Fieldhouse.
Pitt had eight wrestlers earn podium finishes, including three who battled for championship titles. The Panthers finished just a half a point behind Rutgers, as the Scarlet Knights claimed the team title.
Evans led the Panthers by claiming the 157-pound title, while four others recorded top five finishes. Tyler Chappell (125) and Anthony Santaniello (141) each placed second in their respective weight classes, while Chase Kranitz (184) finished fourth and Matt Marlow (125) finished in fifth place.
Evans earned the title with a 4-2 victory over Bryce Lowery of Indiana in the championship match. Evans took a 1-0 edge after a scoreless first period and secured a takedown to take a 4-1 lead heading into the third period and held on for the win.
Chappell and Santaniello had dominant runs through their brackets en route to the championship matches. Chappell secured two wins over ranked opponents, defeating No. 21 Dedrick Navarro (Northwestern) in the quarterfinals and No. 17 Koda Holeman (Cal Poly) in the semifinals. Chappell battled back from a 5-0 deficit in the championship match but ultimately fell, 6-5, to No. 25 Blake West (NIU) to secure second place.
Santaniello claimed a 4-2 victory over No. 9 Zeth Romney (Cal Poly) in the quarterfinals and defeated Dylan Chappell (Bucknell), 9-4, in the semifinals. Santaniello faced Elijah Cortez (Spartan Combat) in the finals and fell in an 8-3 decision to finish in second place.
