Strong Second Half Leads Miami Past Pitt in ACC Opener, 76-69

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Cameron Corhen scored a team-high 17 points and Pitt put together a historic 20-0 first-half run, but the Panthers were unable to hold on as Miami rallied for a 76-69 victory Tuesday night at Watsco Center in both teams' Atlantic Coast Conference opener.
Miami improves to 12-2 on the season with the win, including a 1-0 mark in ACC play. Pitt falls to 7-7 and 0-1 in the ACC.
Pitt led 43-33 at halftime after dominating the final 11 minutes of the opening period, which included a 20-0 run that is the largest Pitt unanswered spurt in ACC history. Miami stormed back in the second half with multiple runs to erase the deficit and claim the victory in the 50th all-time meeting between the programs.
The historic run began with Pitt trailing 25-15 with 6:48 remaining in the first half. Corhen stopped a Miami 11-0 spurt with a basket off an Omari Witherspoon assist, and the Panthers were off and running. Damarco Minor gave Pitt the lead with a driving layup to make it 26-25, and Barry Dunning, Jr. capped the surge with a baseline three-pointer for a 35-25 advantage. The 20-0 run lasted more than five minutes as Miami missed eight consecutive field goal attempts.
Miami took control in the second half with an 11-0 run early in the period to tie the game at 45-45, then took its first lead since the first half on the next possession. The Hurricanes built their advantage and sealed the victory at the free-throw line, making 20-of-26 attempts for the game compared to Pitt's 9-of-17.
Corhen finished with 17 points on 8-of-12 shooting and added eight rebounds. Dunning, Jr. contributed 16 points, while Minor added 14 points and four assists. Roman Siulepa, who entered the game averaging 20.0 points over the past two contests, finished with 10 points.
Malik Reneau led Miami with 28 points on 8-of-13 shooting and a perfect 10-of-10 performance at the free-throw line. Tre Donaldson added 19 points for the Hurricanes.
Pitt shot 45.0 percent from the field (27-of-60) for the game, including 53.3 percent (16-of-30) in the first half, but managed just 36.7 percent (11-of-30) in the second half. The Panthers were 6-of-25 (24.0 percent) from three-point range for the game. Miami finished at 44.8 percent (26-of-58) from the field and controlled the glass, holding a 43-28 advantage on the boards.
The Panthers return to action Saturday, hosting Clemson at noon inside the Petersen Events Center. The game will be televised on The CW.
