PITTSBURGH – The No. 3 Pitt volleyball team (21-3, 13-1 ACC) recorded its second straight sweep of the weekend, defeating Virginia (10-14, 3-11 ACC) on Sunday afternoon. Haiti Tautua'a posted a career-high 31 assists along with six digs, four blocks and a kill.
The Panthers dominated set one from the first point as Virginia needed a timeout at 12-4. The Cavaliers went on a 4-0 run of their own down the stretch; however, three Pitt kills and unforced errors on the side of Virginia caused the Cavaliers to take their final timeout at 19-13. Abbey Emch led the way offensively to secure the 25-15 win in set one.
Virginia rebounded well after the break, limiting Pitt to a narrow 15-14 lead at the media timeout. Olivia Babcock, Tautua'a and Emch each registered a kill following the break to nudge the Cavaliers to take their first timeout of set two, down 20-16. Shortly after, Pitt took a timeout but then flipped the script and caused Virginia to talk things over at 22-19. A Bayless kill and two Cavalier attack errors secured set two for the Panthers, 25-19.
Set three remained close early, but the Panthers pulled ahead 12-7 at the Virginia timeout. The Cavaliers tried to stop Pitt's momentum with another timeout at 18-9 but were unsuccessful. The Panthers eventually claimed the third set 25-12 and the completed the sweep, 3-0.
Pitt heads west next weekend to play No. 5 Stanford on Friday at 10 p.m. ET and Cal on Sunday at 3 p.m. ET. Both matches can be streamed on ACCNX.
