PITTSBURGH – The No. 5 Pitt volleyball team (12-2, 4-0 ACC) defeated Georgia Tech (6-7, 1-3 ACC) 3-1 (25-17, 25-19, 21-25, 25-23) on Sunday afternoon in front of another sold-out crowd. Olivia Babcock led the match offensively, recording 25 kills for the third time this season. Blaire Bayless registered a career-high 16 kills to compliment Babcock on the attack.
The Panthers led 8-5 early in set one but called a timeout after Georgia Tech narrowed the gap, 10-9. A pair of kills for Babcock and Bayless forced the Yellow Jackets to take a timeout in the following stretch, down 16-12. Mallorie Meyer continued her impressive service run and propelled Pitt to a convincing 20-12 lead, and Georgia Tech was forced to take its final timeout. The Yellow Jackets were unable to complete the comeback, and Pitt took the first set, 25-17.
Neither team found much separation in set two as Pitt held a narrow 15-13 lead at the media timeout. Pitt's offense, including a kill from freshman Marina Pezelj, caused Georgia Tech to call a timeout down 20-18 and then again at 22-18. A Pezelj ace and two Panther kills allowed for Pitt to win set two, 25-19.
Both teams were tied at 9-9 in the third, but a 6-1 run in favor of the Yellow Jackets gave them a significant lead at the media break. Georgia Tech took a pair of timeouts in the following stretch as the Panthers clawed to within two at 19-17. Pitt continued to push, but Georgia Tech ultimately earned the 25-21 third set victory.
The fourth set was close from start to finish as the Panthers and Yellow Jackets were within one point at the media timeout, 15-14. Pitt had to call a timeout down 18-16, but a pair of Babcock kills helped convince Georgia Tech to call a timeout shortly after at 19-19. The Yellow Jackets went up 22-20, but Pitt came back firing on all cylinders, going on a 5-1 run to win the set, 25-23, and the match, 3-1.
