THE OPENING TIP

Pitt opens the 2025-26 regular season Monday evening, by hosting Youngstown State in the Petersen Events Center. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. with Jeff Hathhorn and former Panther Nick Rivers calling the action on ACCNX.
The game will also be broadcast on the Pitt Radio Network (flagship 93.7 The Fan) with Bill Hillgrove (play-by-play) and Curtis Aiken (analysis) on the broadcast.
Pitt is 8-1 all-time against Youngstown State, including five consecutive wins and a 4-0 mark inside Petersen Events Center. Most recently, the Panthers defeated the Penguins 69-53 in the 2018 season opener, a game that took place on Nov. 6 at home.
Pitt went 17-15 a year ago, which included a mark of 8-12 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Jeff Capel begins his eighth year at the helm of the Panthers, posting a 114-107 record in his first seven years, but that mark is 63-38 over the past three years, an average of 21.0 wins a season.
Youngstown State went 21-13 in the 2024-25 season, its third consecutive 20-win campaign. In fact, YSU owns a Horizon League best 86 wins in the last four years. Head Coach Ethan Faulkner starts his second season leading the Penguins, but has has been at Youngstown State for six years prior to 2025-26, serving as an assistant coach for three years and then as associate head coach for another two seasons.
