STANFORD, Calif. — Playing the nation's top-ranked team for the second time in three matches, the Pitt men's soccer team fell to No. 1 Stanford, 2-0, Saturday evening at Cagan Stadium.
With the loss, the Panthers (4-6-2, 0-4-1 ACC) fell to 0-5 in road matches this season. Pitt has also gone 258 minutes and 13 seconds without a goal, dating back to Sept. 26 against NC State.
The Cardinal (11-1-1, 5-1-0 ACC) stymied the Panthers' attack Saturday, holding Pitt to just one shot attempt — its fewest since Oct. 11, 2016, against Penn State.
The first half was evenly contested, with both sides enjoying stretches of possession. Pitt's back line held the potent Stanford attack in check, and the score remained tied 0-0 despite sustained pressure as halftime approached.
The Cardinal broke through just under five minutes into the second period to take a 1–0 lead. The Panthers pressed forward in search of an equalizer, but Stanford doubled its advantage in the 75th minute to seal the win.
Junior forward Albert Thorsen recorded the Panthers' lone shot of the match. On the defensive end, junior goalkeeper Jack Moxom faced 14 shots and made five saves.
