PITTSBURGH—University of Pittsburgh Director of Athletics Allen Greene has announced a contract extension for women's volleyball head coach Dan Fisher. The 2024 AVCA National Coach of the Year is now set to lead the Panthers through at least the 2030 season.
"Dan Fisher has built an elite volleyball program at the University of Pittsburgh in every respect," Greene said. "His team, on and off the court, has captured the attention and hearts of our entire region, filling arenas and becoming 'must-see TV.' While his coaching acumen is nationally renowned, I believe Dan's greatest strength is the genuine relationships he forms with his student-athletes and the strong team culture he builds. That's why Pitt is a destination for top volleyball talent from coast to coast. Personally speaking, I deeply appreciate the relationship Dan and I have formed in a relatively short period of time, and am excited to lock arms with him as he prepares his team for another championship run."
"I'm grateful to be in a community and at a university that values and supports volleyball," Fisher said. "I'm specifically grateful to Chancellor Joan Gabel and Allen Greene for the trust they put into our program. In these uncertain times in college athletics, it feels good to have a partner like Allen to chart these unknown waters with. I am appreciative of the impact he has made in a short amount of time and am excited to continue chasing championships with this team and staff."
Fisher has coached Pitt into the elite class of college volleyball programs. He has won six ACC Championships, led Pitt to four consecutive National Semifinals and earned five straight Regional Final appearances. The Panthers have won more games in the last seven seasons than any other Division I program, and Pitt is the only team in the nation to advance to the 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024 National Semifinal.
The 2024 season marked the Panthers' most successful campaign ever, resulting in an outright ACC Championship and National Semifinal appearance. Pitt's 33 wins marked the most since the 1987 season, good for a .943 winning percentage. The Panthers began the season on a 36-set winning streak, the most consecutive sets won in program history. Pitt defeated 12 opponents in the top 25, led the country in hitting percentage (.332) and finished top 10 in opponent hitting percentage (3rd - 0.135), blocks per set (8th - 2.81) and assists per set (10th - 13.18).
Under Fisher's guidance, sophomore Olivia Babcock became the first player in program history to earn AVCA National Player of the Year honors. Babcock earned that prestigious award after being named the AVCA National Freshman of the Year in 2023. She was also tabbed the 2024 ACC Player of the Year, joining all-time Pitt great Kayla Lund as the only Panthers to receive that recognition.
Babcock, Rachel Fairbanks and Torrey Stafford earned AVCA First Team All-America honors this season, the most of any program in the country. For the second consecutive season, all seven Pitt starters received all-conference honors and were represented on the AVCA East Coast All-Region Team.
