PITTSBURGH – Rising freshman forward Kiara Williams will miss the 2024-25 season after successfully undergoing surgery to repair a lower leg injury.
"We certainly wish Kiara well as she starts her recovery process," said head coach Tory Verdi. "She will work hard with our training staff over the coming months, and we expect her to make a full recovery. Despite this setback, she has a bright future ahead."
Williams, a native of Palm Bay, Fla., averaged 10.6 points and 7.4 rebounds per game during her senior campaign at Palm Bay High School, leading her team to the quarterfinals of the 2024 Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) 4A Girls Basketball Playoffs.
The standout forward led Florida's 4A District 8 in doubles-doubles during her senior season with six, while ranking second in blocks per game (0.8).
As a junior, Williams averaged 13.1 points and 8.0 rebounds, along with 2.3 assists, 1.7 steals and 0.4 blocks per game.
Despite the loss of Williams for the 2024-25 campaign, Pitt's roster remake has continued to take shape under second-year head coach Tory Verdi.
Williams, along with guard Audrey Biggs highlight Pitt's freshman class, while the Panthers welcome five transfers in Amiya Jenkins (Kentucky), Brooklynn Miles (Kentucky), Khadija Faye (Texas), MaKayla Elmore (Clemson) and Mikayla Johnson (Colorado).
