Pitt Track and Field Concludes Outdoor Season at NCAA Championships

EUGENE, Ore. – The Pittsburgh track and field team concluded outdoor competition as five athletes were named Honorable Mention All-Americans for their participation in the NCAA Championships at Hayward Field.
WEDNESDAY RECAP
On the opening night of action, the men's 4x400 meter relay team of Malik Ricketts, Nigel Hussey, Stephon Brown and Devin Nugent took 20th place with a time of 3:08.44. Each member of the relay earned Honorable Mention All-American status for their efforts.
THURSDAY RECAP
The following night, Ilse Steigenga placed 20th in the long jump, her first of two events. A native of Exmorra, Netherlands, Steigenga's best leap of the night measured 6.12 meters. The junior received Honorable Mention All-American distinction.
HEPTATHLON RECAP
The last two days of NCAA Championship action featured the heptathlon, a seven-part event in which participants compete in the 100-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, the 200-meter race, long jump, javelin and the 800-meter run.
Steigenga set off on the first day earning 2924 points. She earned 633 points in the 100-meter hurdles, 736 points in the high jump, 642 points in the shot put and finished the day with a personal best time of 24.72 in the 200-meter race. Her 11th place finish in the half-lap race added 913 points to her total.
When action resumed on the second day, Steigenga took 12th place in the long jump with a leap of 5.89-meters. This placement added 816 points to her score as the competition moved to the javelin throw where she added 487 points. The ACC heptathlon champion finished 9th in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:17.80 to add 854 points to her two-day combined total of 5081 points. Steigenga earned her second Honorable Mention All-American nod with her 22nd place finish in the heptathlon.
