SOUTH BEND, In. – The Panthers took the series opener at Notre Dame, 3-1, on Friday night. Pitt starter Ryan Andrade gave the Panthers his best start of the season in a career-long outing.
Luke Cantwell went 2-4 with a walk and two RBI on his two-run single up the middle in the top of the fourth inning. Cantwell has reached base safely in 38-consecutive games. C.J. Funk collected his 12th multi-hit game of the season as he went 2-3 with a walk. With Funk's walk in the second inning, he is now fourth all-time in walks in program history. Josh Spiegel continued his hot streak, going 2-4 with an RBI single up the middle in the third. Spiegel currently has a five-game hitting streak and has recorded a hit in eighth out of his last ten games. Dom Popa, Jayden Melendez and Justin Fogel all recorded hits tonight as well.
Ryan Andrade provided Pitt with a career-long outing and possibly the best start of his career. Andrade allowed just one run on five hits while striking out seven batters in a career-long 7.1 innings, earning his first win of the season. The right-hander walked just two batters all evening and worked into the eighth inning for the first time in his career. Phil Fox came in with two runners in scoring position in the eighth, escaped the jam and then went 1-2-3 in the ninth to earn his sixth save of the year. Fox has earned a save in his last three outings.
The Panthers strung together three-consecutive singles to start the third and got on the board first courtesy of a Josh Spiegel RBI single up the middle. Luke Cantwell and Jayden Melendez each singled with one out in the third which put runners at first and second for the DH Spiegel. Spiegel drove in Cantwell from second and line drive single up the middle and Pitt led 1-0 after three.
Pitt tagged on two more in the top of the fourth and extended their lead to three. C.J. Funk led off the inning with a single left, Popa followed two batters later with a two-out walk and Pitt had runners at first and second for the second-consecutive inning. With two outs, Luke Cantwell lined a two-run double down the left field line and the Panthers led 3-0.
Ryan Andrade continued to dominate on the mound and worked into the eighth inning for the first time in his career. Entering today's game, Andrade had only gone six innings in a start before.
Phil Fox escaped a jam in the eighth inning and would shut the door on the Fighting Irish in the bottom of the ninth to earn his sixth save of the season.
