SYRACUSE, NY – Pitt Lacrosse outscored the No. 3 Syracuse Orange in the second half 6-4, but ultimately fell in the conference clash by a score of 16-7 at CNS Stadium in New York.
It was another tough start to a game for the Panthers as Syracuse scored 12 first half goals to the Panthers' one. Pitt had chances from a good defensive effort, but turnovers on the transition and missed shots squandered any opportunities they did have. Senior Maureen McNierney scored the only goal in the first for Pitt, which found the back of the net off of a deflection.
The second half was a much more closely contested period and Pitt's renewed defensive efforts paid off as they only conceded four goals in the final 30 minutes and grabbed eight ground balls to the Orange's four. Freshman Kaitlyn Giandonato scored the third quarter goal for the Panthers, her tenth of the season. Pitt scored the first three of the final quarter, thanks to goals from Jenna Hendrickson, Sydney Naylor and Madigan Lublin. The intensity continued for the visitors after giving up one to Syracuse, as Hendrickson and Ava Washington scored the last two in the game to finish off the effort for the Panthers.
For the game, Pitt recorded 14 ground balls to Syracuse's 12 and caused five turnovers. Goalies Audrey Moran and Molly Cain combined for seven saves in the cage.
The Panthers now turn to the home stretch of the season with games against Robert Morris (4/9), North Carolina (4/13) and Clemson (4/18). Each of the games will take place at Highmark Stadium.
