Devin Nugent Wins 400 Hurdles at Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Pitt track and field team competed in the three-day, 128th running of the Penn Relays. Devin Nugent headlined the weekend with a victory in the men's 400 hurdles, the first in the event by a Pitt athlete since Paul Thrash won in 1957.
THURSDAY RECAP
Nugent's triumph in the men's 400-meter hurdles championship event paved the way for a new personal best time of 50.84. Nugent, a native of nearby Abington, Pa., recorded the 27th fastest time in the country this year after his performance on Thursday. He still holds the fourth best time in the event in program history.
Foluke Olujide-Ajibade placed third in the women's hammer throw championship. She started the meet off strong with her best throw of the day of 61.88-meters coming on her first attempt.
Aubrey Leneweaver hit a new personal record in the women's 400-meter hurdles, finishing in 19th place with a time of 1:01.16.
FRIDAY RECAP
The second day of competition was filled with a plethora of relay action. The men's 4x100 relay quartet of Darren McQueen Jr., Nigel Hussey, Clement Campbell and Stephon Brown ran the sixth fastest time of 40.13 in the preliminary round of the Championship of America section to advance to the final the following day.
The women's 4x200 relay team of Somiyah Braggs, Sydney McCallum, Caleia Johnson and Success Duruzor took fifth in 1:37.41 while the men's 4x200 squad of Darren McQueen Jr., Malik Ricketts, Nigel Hussey and Thomas McDonough finished fourth in the event with a time of 1:24.34.
In the women's 4x400, Caleia Johnson, Logan Neely, Success Duruzor and Lydia Bottelier crossed the line in 3:38.11, the tenth best time in program history. The quartet finished tenth and missed out on qualifying for the Championship of America final by one spot. The men's 4x400 group also had a tenth-place performance. Malik Ricketts, Nigel Hussey, Stephon Brown and Devin Nugent ran a time of 3:07.63.
SATURDAY RECAP
Graduate student Lydia Bottelier finished in fourth in the women's high jump. She was able to clear 1.70-meters before bowing out of the competition at the 1.75-meter mark.
Senior Ilse Steigenga took silver in the women's long jump. Steigenga leaped the furthest on her fifth attempt, jumping 6.17-meters into the sand pit. On the men's side, Clement Campbell earned bronze in the men's long jump. At the end of competition, Campbell and a competitor from Troy were tied as both athletes leaped 7.16-meters. However, Campbell's second-best mark of 7.09-meters was higher than the second-best mark of Troy's jumper and he was awarded third place.
UP NEXT
The Panthers will be off before traveling to Atlanta for the ACC Outdoor Championships hosted by Georgia Tech. The three-day conference meet will begin on May 9 and run through May 11 at George C. Griffin Track.
