PITTSBURGH, PA – Pitt Lacrosse battled and fought with the No. 16 team in the country, but dropped Saturday's ACC game to North Carolina 16-9.
The first quarter was a close one and showed that the Panthers came to play. The two teams went back and forth for the game's first four goals. Kaitlyn Giandonato opened the scoring for Pitt with her 12th of the season and Jenna Hendrickson scored from the eight meter for the Panthers' two first quarter goals. North Carolina netted three in same time frame to take the early lead of only one.
The Tar Heels gained control of the game in the second, outscoring the Panthers 5-1. The lone goal for Pitt came from Ava Washington, who scored number 29 on the season.
After halftime, Pitt made adjustments and once again put together a tight quarter. Hendrickson scored another off a nice feed by Sydney Naylor and Avery Moon spun around the crease with two defenders in her face and finished high in the upper corner for her first goal of the day.
Play opened up a bit in the final period of play, but the Panthers kept putting up a fight. The Panthers scored four goals with one from Emily Coughlin, one from Jill Fenech and two from Washington.
Washington finished the day with three goals, her sixth game of the season with at least three. Sydney Naylor provided three assists, the most in a game in her career. Goalie Audrey Moran set a new career high with 15 saves in the game.
Pitt will host Clemson Thursday, April 18 for the final regular season contest of 2024. Opening draw is scheduled for 4 PM.
