Panthers Fall in ACC Opener

ATLANTA – Pitt fell in both game of a doubleheader to Georgia Tech in the ACC series opener at Mewborn Field, Saturday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets put on a strong offensive performance, defeating the Panthers by the scores of 14-5 and 10-1.
Game One
The Yellow Jackets took an early 8-0 lead over the Panthers as the NCAA homerun leaders loaded the bases in the bottom of the first after three hit batters. Madison Dobbins hit a grand slam to right center field to put the Jackets up 4-0.
Georgia Tech extended their lead in the bottom of the second off a sac fly and another three-run homer from Tiffany Domingue. The Yellow Jackets score one more run off a wild pitch to take a 9-0 lead after two full innings of play.
The Panthers got the offense going in the top of the fourth inning, as Cami Compson drew a leadoff walk and Ana Hernandez reached on a fielder's choice. Desirae Martinez and KK Esparza hit back-to-back home runs to left field to make the score 10-3. The Panthers drew back-to-back walks and Macy Hamilton hit an RBI single up the middle to put the runners at the corners. Kat Rodriguez scored from third off a wild pitch, capping off the five-run inning.
The Yellow Jackets scored one more run off a single to right center before Dobbins hit her second homer of the day, a three-run walk off homer to right center to secure the run-rule victory in the bottom of the fifth.
Game Two
The Panthers and Yellow Jackets each scored a run in the opening inning. Kat Rodriguez led off with a single to left field, followed by another bunt single from Macy Hamilton. Kylie Griggs got the Panthers in scoring position with a sac bunt. Rodriguez scored to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead off an Amanda "Tuta" Ramirez sac bunt.
Georgia Tech didn't score in the second inning and then scored in each of the next four innings. The Yellow Jackets broke the 1-1 tie with a sac fly in the third inning and added two more runs in the fourth off a Sarah Beth Allen two-run homer to right field. Abby Hughes hit another solo home run in the fifth to give the Jackets a 4-1 lead.
The Jackets scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth to secure the victory. Mallorie Black hit a three-run homer to go up 7-1, followed by a walk-off homer from Tiffany Domingue to secure the 10-1 victory.

The Panthers wrap up the ACC series opener against Georgia Tech with a single game tomorrow at 1 p.m. Pitt will travel to FGCU for the Spring Break Classic from March 8-10.
