KENT, OH – Pitt Lacrosse scored their first goal 45 seconds into Tuesday's game and never looked back. Behind a season-high 21 goals, the Panthers defeated the Kent State Golden Flashes 21-5 at Dix Stadium.
The Panthers never trailed and actually scored nine unanswered goals to begin the game. Jenna Hendrickson and Ava Washington each scored two goals in the first quarter, and Sydney Naylor and Avery Moon added one a piece to extend the Pitt lead to six after one period of play. Pitt won five draw controls in the quarter to gain possession and took advantage of those opportunities and they didn't slow down in the second. Moon, Naylor and Emily Coughlin each slotted one home in the second fifteen minutes to balloon the early lead to nine before Kent State finally opened their scoring on the day. Pitt came right back with another 3-0 scoring run (Coughlin, Maureen McNierney and Kaitlyn Giandonato) to strengthen the grip on the game even more before the Golden Flashes closed the half with a second goal of their own.
The third and fourth quarters gave Pitt the chance to give minutes to many that don't normally have the opportunity and they took advantage. The Panthers still outscored Kent State 9-3 including goals from Kendall Barnes, Washington, Jill Fenech (2), Giandonato, Naylor, Devon Cavanaugh (2) and Maggie Long.
Pitt 10 assists and 21 ground balls matched season highs for the Panthers and they dominated the draw circle 21-7. For the third time this year, all three Pitt goalies played and only allowed five goals on the day.
Next up for the Panthers: honoring the seniors and graduates for Senior Day Saturday against Virginia Tech. First draw is set for 11 AM.
