PITTSBURGH – Pitt Lacrosse handles business Monday afternoon, beating Detroit Mercy 17-6 thanks to hat tricks from Jenna Hendrickson and Ava Washington and goals from eight additional Panthers.
We're really happy to get back in the win column," Head Coach Emily Boissonneault said after the victory. "We fell like we are progressing as a team each time we get out on the field and this win gives us the confidence and reward for all of that work."
Pitt took control early in the contest, scoring the game's first three goals in the opening six minutes of play. Senior Maureen McNierney scored her third of the season with the help of freshman Avery Moon, who received the starting nod for the first time this season. Less than a minute later, Hendrickson dove to net and finished beyond the reach of the Titans goalie and Washington did so similarly off a feed from graduate Camdyn O'Donnell. Detroit Mercy did get a goal back three minutes later thanks to good ball movement between Libby Cuckler and Alyssa Jarvis who found the back of the net. The momentum swung firmly back to the home team afterwards though, with O'Donnell scoring her first of the day thanks to a pass from Madigan Lublin and Washington scoring her second and third before the quarter break.
The second period was all Pitt, as the Panthers outscored the Titans 8-1. The eight goals were scored by Hendrickson (1), Sydney Naylor (2), Madigan Lublin (2), Dylana Williams (1), Ava Sumwalt (1) and Camdyn O'Donnell (1). Detroit Mercy's Marina Butler put home the only goal in the quarter for the visitors to bring the halftime score to 14-2.
The Titans actually outscored the Panthers in the second half, 4-3, as Pitt rotated in reserves throughout the remaining game play with running clock. In that time, Hendrickson scored her tenth of the season, Jill Fenech scored her first of the season and sophomore Karis Mameniskis slotted home the first of her career for Pitt.
All three Panther goalies on the roster saw time in net and made 10 saves collectively. Freshmen Kaitlyn Giandonato and Megan Sheridan led the way on defense with two caused turnovers each while Maggie Long set a career high with five draw controls.
"Going into this weekend, we have some things we want to work on. We look forward to competing against Louisville and if we can clean up these little details, we will have a great game on Saturday," Boissonneault continued.
Pitt closes out their three-game homestand as the Cardinals come to town Saturday, March 2. The game is set for a 12 PM start at Highmark Stadium. The first 300 fans in attendance will receive a Pitt Lacrosse headband.
