Panthers Crush Two School Records on Day Four of ACC Championships

GREENSBORO, NC – The University of Pittsburgh swimming and diving teams topped off day four of the ACC Championships with two more records broken on Friday at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
Stepan Goncharov etched his name in the record book as he broke the men's 100 back school record with his time of 45.44 – placing fourth overall in the event. The women's 400 medley relay team crushed the school record in the finals – clocking in at 3:35.15.
PRELIMS
The Panthers had a strong start to the fourth day of competition at the ACC Championships. Pitt placed ten Panthers in the final events with five swimmers securing new best times.
In the women's 200 fly, Sydney Gring and Olivia Yoo claimed a spot in the finals after their prelim races. Gring claimed a spot in the B final with her time of 1:58.80 and Yoo secured a C final spot after posting a best time of 2:00.82. For the men's team, Adam Mahler got his name in the B final after claiming tenth place (1:43.82) in the 200 fly prelims.
Claire Jansen got herself a spot in the C final of the women's 100 back after clocking in a time of 53.19. Sophomore Goncharov earned himself a new best time of 45.87 in the men's 100 back to secure a spot in the A final. Krzysztof Radziszewski was not far behind – claiming his spot in the B finals with his time of 45.96.
Continuing the momentum, four Panthers earned a spot in the 100 breast finals. Jessica Strong and Angelina Messina claimed their spots in the C final after finishing in 21st and 22nd place, respectively. Messina's time of 1:02.44 earned her a new best time. On the men's side, Jerry Chen put up a 52.87 to take 14th overall – securing his spot in the B final. Nick Short clocked in at 54.51 to earn a spot in the C final of the men's 100 breast.
In the women's platform prelims, Pitt saw three Panthers score big points towards the overall team total. Freshman Mariana Osorio Mendoza claimed 11th place overall with her 224.90. Maggie Foley and Emma Gravgaard also collected points for Pitt, finishing in 18 and 19th-place, respectively.
FINALS
Pitt kicked off the Friday night finals with the men's and women's 200 fly. Gring took 14th place overall with her time of 1:58.76. Yoo secured a best time for the second time today - clocking in her time of 2:00.35. Mahler took first overall in the C final to secure ninth place overall for the men's 200 fly (1:43.31).
Goncharov shattered the men's 100 back record tonight – getting his hand on the wall fourth overall to finish with a time of 45.44. Radziszewski tabbed 12th place overall after clocking his time of 45.99. For the women's team, Jansen took first in the C final with her time of 52.60 to claim 17th place overall.
Continuing to push through the final events, Pitt posted strong swims in the 100 breast. Strong and Messina each swam in the C final – securing 21st and 23rd place, respectively. On the men's side, Chen posted a 52.72 to claim 11th place overall. Short rounded out the individual finals for the night – earning 23rd place with his time of 54.55.
The Panthers finished off the evening with some showstopping 400 medley relay races. The women's relay comprised of Jansen, Strong, Yendell and Avery Kudlac smashed the school record – securing seventh place overall with their time of 3:35.15. The men's relay team of Goncharov, Jerry Chen, Goraj and Dominic Toledo finished the race in eighth overall – finishing with a 3:07.30.
UP NEXT
The Panthers will come back to the Greensboro Aquatic Center for the final day of competition at the ACC Championships. The preliminary rounds are slated for a 9:30 a.m. start with the finals set for 5:30 p.m.
