TEMPE, AZ – Four Panthers scored a pair of goals each, but that wasn't enough offense Thursday night as Pitt fell 18-11 to Arizona State at Sun Devil Soccer and Lacrosse Stadium.
The first quarter started back and forth, with the two teams exchanging early goals. Junior Sydney Naylor and freshman Paige Telatovich got the offense going before Arizona State went on a five-goal run to swing the momentum. Junior Ava Washington placed one in the net off the free position with only two seconds left in the opening period to bring the score to 6-3 in favor of the Sun Devils.
The home team continued to push in the second fifteen minutes as Arizona State went on another five-goal run. Freshman Avery Moon ended the drought and scored the final goal of the quarter as the two teams went into the locker room as ASU led 11-4.
The Panthers kept fighting in the second half of the contest that saw the two teams both score seven goals. Pitt's second half goals came from Emily Coughlin, Kaitlyn Giandonato, Jenna Hendrickson (2), Naylor, Telatovich and Washington. The first half deficit coupled alongside four turnovers and 17 fouls proved to be too much for the visitors to overcome.
Coughlin grabbed three draw controls and Jill Fenech and Maggie Long each added two. Goalie Audrey Moran made 10 saves on the night, the fifth 10+ save performance in her career.
Pitt will face in-state foe No. 17 Penn State next, on Tuesday in State College.
