
No. 1 Pitt Falls to High Point

PITTSBURGH – The top-ranked Pitt men's soccer team fell to High Point, 1-0, Monday evening at Ambrose Urbanic Field.
The loss marked the Panthers' (10-3-0, 4-0-0 ACC) second defeat in as many matches and their first-ever loss to High Point (8-2-2, 4-0-0 Big South).
Monday, Pitt controlled possession for much of the contest, before a 23rd minute High Point header opened the scoring. Pitt then began to play on the front foot for the remainder of the contest but was unable to find the equalizer. Of note, despite falling 1-0, Pitt controlled possession 66 percent.
Offensively, senior midfielder Guilherme Feitosa led the Panthers with a team-high three shots, including one on goal. In net, junior keeper Cabral Carter tallied a game-high four saves.
How It Happened
- High Point pushed the tempo early offensively, before Pitt settled into the match and began to possess the ball.
- Led by its midfielders, the Panthers controlled possession centrally over the following minutes.
- At the 22:21 mark, High Point opened the scoring on a header from about eight yards out.
- Facing its second 1-0 deficit in as many matches, Pitt began to attack High Point's back line.
- The Panthers failed to equalize over the ensuing 22 minutes of action and trailed at the halftime break.
- High Point committed seven fouls in the opening frame, compared to only one for Pitt.
- Pitt's intensity picked up in the second half, as the Panthers began to play out of the back, before making several quality runs into the box.
- High Point's defense stifled the Panthers' attack over the following 20 minutes of action.
- Pitt had its best chances of the contest down the stretch.
- Notably, with less than one minute remaining, Daniel Gamboa Gonzalez nearly headed home the equalizer, but his attempt sailed just off frame.
- High Point held on to knock off No. 1 Pitt, 1-0.
