PITTSBURGH—Pitt senior placekicker Ben Sauls and sophomore defensive end Jimmy Scott were honored by the Atlantic Coast Conference for their performances in the Panthers' 17-15 victory over California this past Saturday.
For the second time this season and third time in his career, Sauls was named ACC Specialist of the Week.
- Sauls' school-record tying 58-yard field goal ultimately provided the winning margin over the Golden Bears. The kick gave Pitt a 17-6 second-quarter lead and tied the school mark set by Alex Kessman (2020).
- On the day, Sauls was perfect on each of his three placements, converting two extra points in addition to his booming field goal.
- Sauls has now made 12 consecutive field goals dating back to last season, tying the school record held by Chris Ferencik (1995) and Conor Lee (2007).
- Sauls is perfect on 38 placements this season (10-10 FG and 28-28 PAT) for a team-leading 58 points.
- The Lou Groza Award candidate was previously honored by the ACC this season for his Cincinnati performance (Sept. 7) and during his sophomore campaign (Nov. 19, 2022 against Duke).
Scott earned ACC Defensive Lineman of the Week for the first time in his career after spearheading Pitt's exceptional defensive effort against Cal.
- Scott collected six tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and three sacks against the Bears. His sacks went for a total of 17 yards in losses.
- Two of Scott's sacks came within a three-play span late in the third quarter, turning back a Cal drive that began at the Pitt 40-yard line. The pair of sacks pushed the Bears back to their own 46 and forced a punt.
- Scott's efforts helped Pitt limit the Bears to just 63 yards rushing on 40 carries (1.6 avg.).
- On the season, Scott has totaled 14 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, four sacks and two pass breakups. He leads the Panthers in sacks and ranks second in TFLs.
Pitt is ranked No. 20 in both major polls after achieving its first 6-0 start since 1982. Following an open date this week, the Panthers resume action on Thursday, Oct. 24, when they host ACC foe Syracuse at 7:30 p.m. The game will be nationally televised by ESPN.
