
Panthers Fall at Home to No. 11 Duke

PITTSBURGH – On a cold and slushy day in Pittsburgh the exterior weather crept into the Petersen Events Center in the form of a sub-par shooting night for the Panthers as Pitt dropped a 75-53 decision to No. 11 Duke. Pitt shot just 32.8 percent (19-of-58) from the field, including an under 30 percent effort in the opening half as it fell behind by double-figures and could not recover.
Pitt fell behind by 25 points at the half as Duke shot a blistering 9-of-17 from beyond the arc against a Pitt defense that entered the night leading the ACC in three-point percentage defense. Kyle Filipowski went 3-of-3 from long range in the opening half, while Jared McCain and Caleb Foster each made a pair of threes.
The Panthers were just 8-of-28 from the field in the first half, including 3-of-11 (.273) from three-point range. Pitt outscored the Blue Devils, 30-27, in the second half as Duke's shooting came back to earth with an 11-of-26 (.423) showing, including going just 2-of-8 from three-point range after the blistering hot start in the opening half.
Zack Austin led the Panthers with 11 points to go along with two steals and two blocks, while Guillermo Diaz Graham added seven points, eight rebounds, and a career-best five steals. Standout freshman Carlton Carrington was limited to 10 points on 4-of-16 shooting, while Blake Hinson scored nine points on 3-of-7 shooting from beyond the arc.
Filipowski finished with a game-high 26 points and 10 rebounds, while going 11-of-12 from the field. He made his final 11 shots of the game to lead a Blue Devil team that shot 51.8 percent for the game. McCain added 12 points for the visitors, while Foster had eight points and seven assists.
REVERSAL ON THE BOARDS
Pitt entered the night leading the ACC in rebounds per game and rebound margin but was outclassed on the glass by the Blue Devils. Duke won the rebounding battle, 42-26, and dominated the paint with a 32-12 margin in points in the paint.
AT CAPACITY IN THE OAKLAND ZOO
The Oakland Zoo set an all-time attendance mark with 2,750 student tickets out for Tuesday's game against the Blue Devils.
