PITTSBURGH – One of the best pure shooters in the history of Pitt Basketball, Clive 'Clyde' Vaughan joins an elite class of Panther legends with his induction into the Pitt Athletics Hall of Fame this weekend. Vaughan, a two-time All-Big East selection, concluded his career with 2,033 and 922 rebounds, while starring for the Panthers from 1980-84.
The Mount Vernon, N.Y., native helped the Panthers to a pair of Eastern 8 Tournament titles in his first two seasons in Oakland. In 1982, he dominated the tournament with a pair of 21-point games en route to grabbing Most Valuable Player accolades. Vaughan was just a Second Team All-Eastern 8 selection despite averaging 18.0 points and 9.5 rebounds per game and finishing among the top three in the conference in both categories.
Vaughan's excellence was also overlooked in the early days of the Big East as he was left off the first team all-conference teams despite averaging over 20.0 points and 8.0 rebounds per game in each of his last two seasons. In the first year of the Big East, Vaughan would garner third team all-league honors despite leading the conference in scoring (21.9 ppg.), while adding 9.2 rebounds per game. As a senior, Pitt's dynamic wing grabbed Second Team All-Big East honors after averaging 21.0 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. He finished just behind St. John's Chris Mullin for the league scoring lead and established himself as one of the top players in a league that featured the likes of Patrick Ewing (Georgetown), Mullin (St. John's), Pearl Washington (Syracuse), Michael Adams (Boston College), Jay Murphy (Boston College), Ed Pinckney (Villanova), Otis Thorpe (Providence), and David Wingate (Georgetown) among others.
Vaughan was drafted in the sixth round of the 1984 NBA Draft by the Indiana Pacers but returned to his home country of England to enjoy a highly successful seven-year career. He still ranks third on the all-time scoring average list, averaging 28.2 points per game with his 4,766 career points ranking 20th in league history. He also averaged 7.9 rebounds per game, while shooting 57.9% from the floor and 83.2% free throw shooting percentage. Vaughan was the BBL Player of the Year in 1989-90 while playing with Sunderland Saints and made 27 appearances for the English National Team.
Despite starring at Pitt nearly 40 years ago, Vaughan's name is still littered atop the record books. Here is a quick snapshot his standing all-time;
