No. 8 Pitt Set For First Road Test Friday At Georgetown

PITTSBURGH – The No. 8 Pitt men's soccer team (1-0-1, 0-0-0 ACC) opens up their road slate Friday afternoon as they travel to Washington, DC to battle the Georgetown Hoyas at Shaw Field. Kick is set for 4:00 pm and the match will air on FloSports.

THE SERIES – GEORGETOWN
- This meeting marks the 30th between the two programs all-time with the Hoyas owning the 22-7-0 edge in the series.
- Pitt won the last meeting in the series to open up the 2022 season, earning a 2-1 home victory.
- Georgetown has won seven of the past eight in the series including a 5-0 victory in 2019 in the NCAA Tournament.
- Pitt is 2-11-0 all-time on the road against the Hoyas, losing the past four in Washington, DC.
SCOUTING THE HOYAS
- The Hoyas enter Friday's match with a 1-1-0 record as they downed Santa Clara in the opener before falling 5-1 at Stanford on Sunday.
- Jacob Murrell is leading the Hoyas offensive attack through two matches as he has three goals on four shots. Kyle Linhares also has one goal while Kieran Sargeant and Max Viera each have one assist on the year.
- Georgetown is led by Brian Wiese who is in his 18th season. He has a career record of 212-92-41 (.674).
- The Hoyas were tabbed as Big East Preseason favorites to win the east division. Senior defender Kenny Nielsen was picked as preseason Defensive Player of the Year and senior goalkeeper Ryan Schewe was picked as preseason Goalkeeper of the Year.
- Georgetown earned the No. 18 ranking in the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Poll after posting a 12-6-3 overall record and a 8-1-1 Big East mark in 2022. They also advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament but fell to Tulsa, 1-0, in overtime.
PITT EARNS FIRST WIN OF 2023; NOTCHES 5-0 SHUTOUT OF HOWARD MONDAY NIGHT
- The Panthers collected their first win of the regular season Monday night at Ambrose Urbanic Field, knocking off Howard by the score of 5-0.
- Pitt had five different goal scorers in the match including three who netted their first career goal in the win.
- Albert Thorsen opened the scoring with his second of the season before Fabian Grau earned his first collegiate goal. Luis Sahmkow netted his first of the season while Zahir Dyke and Luka Kozomara netted second half goals, each the first of their career.
- Overall in the win, nine players netted at least one point while 12 Panthers posted at least one shot.
- In goal, Cabral Carter secured his first clean sheet of his career as he made one save while the Howard keeper made seven saves in the loss.
- For the match, Pitt posted the 20-2 edge in shots and the 4-0 lead in corner kicks.
NEWCOMERS CONTINUE TO IMPRESS
- The newcomers continued to impress in Pitt's 5-0 win over Howard Monday night.
- A total of 10 newcomers appeared in the win while four, Raphael Cilli, Fabian Grau, Felipe Mercado and Albert Thorsen, earned the start.
- Newcomers accounted for four of the five Pitt goals (Thorsen, Grau, Zahir Dyke, Luka Kozomara).
- Massimo Murania and Mercado also notched their first assists as Panthers in the win.
- After not seeing action in his freshman campaign, Cabral Carter made his second straight start and posted one save to secure his first shutout of his collegiate career.
THORSEN MAKING NOISE
- Freshman forward Albert Thorsen has burst on the scene for Pitt through two matches.
- The talented player has started both matches and produced two goals (one in each) to go along with six shots.
- Thorsen came up clutch in the season opening draw against Penn State as he netted the game-tying goal in the 79th minute. He then notched the game-winning goal against Howard.
- Thorsen is one of six freshmen in the nation with at least two goals on the season.

- Pitt returns home for a top-10 matchup against #5 Marshall on Tuesday night at Ambrose Urbanic Field. Tuesday's match will kick at 6:00 pm and air live on ACC Network with Dalen Cuff and Devon Kerr on the call from Pittsburgh.
