PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh volleyball team will look to build upon its second consecutive NCAA National Semifinal appearance as head coach Dan Fisher revealed the Panthers' 2023 schedule Monday morning.
Entering his 11th season at the helm, Fisher has scheduled 16 matches against teams that competed in the 2022 Division I NCAA Women's Volleyball Championship. Pitt will take on four opponents that reached at least the Sweet 16 (Kentucky, Marquette, Oregon, Louisville). Nine of the Panthers' 11 non-conference matches are against 2022 NCAA Championship qualifiers.
Pitt will travel to Missoula, Montana, Aug. 25-27, to face BYU, host Montana, and UT Rio Grande Valley. The Cougars reached the second round of the 2022 NCAA Championship before the Panthers swept them in three sets to advance to the Sweet 16.
The Panthers return east the following weekend for a home and home series with Kentucky. Pitt travels to Lexington to face the Wildcats Friday, Sept. 1 before hosting Kentucky at the Petersen Events Center Sunday, Sept. 3. The series against Kentucky opens a string of eight consecutive matches against 2022 NCAA Championship teams.
Pitt will play Marquette (Sept. 8) and Loyola-Chicago (Sept. 10) on the road before capping off non-conference play with four consecutive matches at Fitzgerald Field House. Pitt opens the Panther Challenge Thursday, Sept. 14 against Oregon before facing James Madison (Sept. 16) and High Point (Sept. 17).
UMBC comes to Pittsburgh Wednesday, Sept. 20 before the Panthers enter ACC play. Pitt has won at least a share of the conference title in four of the past six seasons.
To kick off ACC play, the Panthers travel South to face Duke (Sept. 22) and North Carolina (Sept. 24) before a four-game homestand featuring matches against Boston College (Sept. 29), Syracuse (Oct. 1), Georgia Tech (Oct. 6), and Clemson (Oct. 8).
Pitt squares off with 2022 NCAA Championship runner-up Louisville on the road Friday, Oct. 13. The two teams split regular season matches a year ago to share the ACC title with the Panthers falling to Louisville, 3-2, in the 2022 NCAA Championship Final Four in Omaha, Neb. Pitt also plays at Notre Dame (Oct. 15) on the road trip.
Three of the next four matches are at home with a trip to NC State (Oct. 20) slotted between Virginia (Oct. 18), Virginia Tech (Oct. 27), and Wake Forest (Oct. 29) matches at Fitzgerald Field House.
Pitt will play three consecutive road matches against 2022 NCAA Championship teams – Florida State (Nov. 3), Miami (Nov. 5), and Georgia Tech (Nov. 10) before hosting Louisville in the second matchup of the season Saturday, Nov. 18 at the Petersen Events Center.
The Panthers will also host Miami (Nov. 22) before closing out the regular season at Syracuse Saturday, Nov. 25.
Pitt volleyball's televised match schedule, as well as a promotional schedule, will be announced at a later date.
