
Pitt Baseball Summer Ball Update

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Thirteen Panthers have been playing throughout four different summer ball leagues this summer, a number of them standing out both on the mound and in the box.
OF Caleb Sturtevant (Valley Baseball League) and RHP Kyle Mosley (Southern California Collegiate Baseball League) are among the Panthers that have been shining the brightest. Sturtevant is hitting .385 with a double, a home run, and nine RBI while Mosley is 2-0 with a 1.37 ERA and 20 strikeouts throughout his five outings.
Cape Cod Baseball League
Pitt had a total of six players playing in the Cape Cod Baseball League at one point with the Chatham Angels' addition of RHP Jack Sokol last week. In his Cape Cod League debut on June 24th Sokol struck out nine over his four innings of relief, he finished with a final line of 4 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 9 K.
Logan Evans has started in all three of the games he has appeared in for the defending champion Bourne Braves, striking out twelve batters in a total of 14 innings pitched. He has an 0-2 record with a 4.50 ERA. Evans dealt in his second to last start on June 20 against the Cotuit Kettleers, he allowed just one run on five hits over five innings.
RHP Kyle Demi threw two scoreless innings in his two appearances for the Wareham Gateman, he struck out two and allowed just one hit. OF CJ Funk drove in five runs including a grand slam in his four games for the Gateman. Both players were released within the last two weeks. Kyle Demi is now playing for the Bristol State Liners in the Appalachian League with Holden Phelps.
Matthew Fernandez has appeared and started in two games for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox. He has an 0-1 record with a 6.75 ERA and has struck out six batters over his eight innings pitched. RHP Dylan Simmons has come on in relief for the YD Red Sox twice in his stint with them, throwing a total of 2.1 innings. He has struck out two and has given up four runs. The Red Sox released Simmons on June 18th.
Valley Baseball League
The Panthers have four more players currently playing in the Valley Baseball League. Nolan Kutney has played in 10 games for the New Market Rebels, he has a single, a home run, three runs scored, four walks, and five RBI. Kutney hit a three-run home run against the Culpeper Cavaliers on June 7th.
Anthony LaSala is hitting .212 in his first 16 games for the Strasburg Express. He's collected five singles, two doubles, three RBI, and seven stolen bases. LaSala went 3-3 with an RBI single on June 11th against the Waynesboro Generals.
Caleb Sturtevant is hitting .385 throughout the first 11 games of his summer ball season for the Woodstock River Bandits. Has 10 hits, which include a double and a home run, he's driven in nine runs and has walked eight times. His best game of the summer so far came on June 6th against Anthony LaSala's Strasburg Express. Sturtevant went 3-4 with a two-run home run and two RBI singles, driving in a total of four on the evening.
Ryan Reed has started in three games for the River Bandits and has pitched in a total of four. He's thrown 11.1 innings in his four appearances and has struck out 18 batters, he's 10th in the Valley Baseball League in strikeouts. He allowed just one run on one hit in his first appearance and first start of the summer, he went four strong innings while striking out six.
Southern California Collegiate Baseball League
Kyle Mosley owns a 2-0 record with a 1.37 ERA and 20 strikeouts over his five appearances in the SCCBL for the Palm Springs Power. He's thrown 13.1 innings and has an opponent batting average of .235. His best outing came in his only start so far this summer. Mosely struck out seven and only surrendered two runs has he went five strong, earning his first win of the season.
Dom Popa has played in nine games for the Power, he has five hits, has driven in three runs, and has walked 11 times. On June 16th against the Long Beach Legends he went 1-3 with an RBI, two walks, and three runs scored.
Appalachian League
RHP Holden Phelps currently holds a 1-0 record with a 3.60 ERA in his three appearances for the Bristol State Liners. He has made two starts over 10 innings pitched and is third on the team in strikeouts with 12. Phelps' best start of the summer came on June 23rd against the Pulaski River Turtles, he struck out seven over five innings and allowed just two runs on four hits. Kyle Demi joined the State Liners this week and has yet to make an appearance.
