PITTSBURGH, PA -- Former Panther middle-infielder Jeffrey Wehler signed a Minor League contract with the Toronto Blue Jays organization this past week, on Thursday June 8, 2023.
After spending four years at Youngstown State, Wehler came to Pittsburgh to play his fifth year. While at Youngstown State Wehler earned All-Conference honors three times. He started in all 53 games for the Panthers last season as he hit .294 and led the team in both doubles (17) and stolen bases (10).
He was named to the ACC All-Tournament Team following his performance during Pitt's run in the 2022 ACC Tournament. The Panthers shocked everyone but themselves by making it out of the pool play round as they earned a berth in the ACC Semifinal game. During the ACC Tournament, Wehler hit .438, with six RBI and two home runs. Those two home runs both came against the No. 3 seed Louisville as Wehler collected the first multi-homer game of his collegiate career.
In addition to his success on the field, Wehler excelled off the field, earning ACC Honor Roll and All-ACC Academic Team honors last season.
Following the conclusion of the 2022 season, Wehler played in the PBR Draft League for the Mahoning Valley Scrappers. This season he has been playing Indy Ball in the Atlantic League for the Staten Island FerryHawks. He was hitting .282 with seven doubles, 13 RBI, and 12 stolen bases prior to his signing.
Wehler will become the third Panther to sign with/be drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays organization. RHP TJ Zeuch became the highest drafted Panther in program history when he was taken 21st overall by the Blue Jays in 2016, he made his debut for them on September 3rd, 2019. David Summer was the first Panther drafted by Toronto; he was taken in the 41st round by the Blue Jays in 1993.
