Panthers Fall to Notre Dame

PITTSBURGH - The Pitt baseball team (13-15, 4-8 ACC) suffered an 11-2 setback to Notre Dame (17-11, 7-7 ACC) on Friday at Charles Cost Field in the second game of the three-game ACC set between the two teams.
The Fighting Irish totaled 11 runs on 13 hits while limiting Pitt to four hits on the day.
Jayden Melendez and Kyle Hess accounted for all four of Pitt's hits. Melendez hit a solo home run in the seventh inning and another in the ninth to bring his season total to five round trippers. Hess collected a pair of singles.
The contest was a 1-0 affair through six innings. Notre Dame broke through in the third inning with an RBI single, but Kyle Mosley kept the Fighting Irish in check for 5.2 frames, striking out four while permitting just the one earned run on four hits and three walks.
Notre Dame came up with a two-RBI double in the seventh to extend its lead to 3-0, but Melendez led off the home half with a solo shot to left center to make it a two-run ballgame.
Unfortunately for the Panthers, Notre Dame scored a fourth run on a wild pitch in the eighth and then plated seven more runs on six hits in the ninth.
The series finale between Pitt and Notre Dame is scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m.
