PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh track & field teams will wear a patch on their uniforms this weekend at the Penn Relays and beyond honoring Herb Douglas, who passed away at the age of 101 this past Saturday.
The Panthers will debut the Herb Douglas patch this week at the 127th Running of The Penn Relays at the historic Franklin Field in Philadelphia. Douglas is no stranger to the Penn Relays as in 1942 he helped his 440-yard relay team at Xavier University (New Orleans, LA) earn the first relay victory by a HBCU in Penn Relays history. He later went on to serve as an official at the prestigious event.
The logo features Douglas' initials (HPD) along with five stars at the top which represents his five intercollegiate championships (four – long jump, one – 100-yard dash) he won during his successful career at Pitt. The ultimate trailblazer, Douglas also earned the bronze medal in the long jump at the 1948 London Olympics.
As announced at his 100th birthday party in 2022, the 300-meter indoor track planned for Pitt's future Victory Heights facility will be named after Herbert P. Douglas Jr. A lasting memory of one of the greatest athletes in Pitt and the city of Pittsburgh history.
